As an alumni of the school I was shocked and somewhat disappointed at how easy college has been for me. I was expecting having to work hard for my grade and be crying every night as we are taught in society to accept when you go off to college. I have had the opposite experience due to my educational background given to me from this facility. The teachers deeply and truly care for their students. I always struggled with math and was able to jump a whole grade level due to dedication my math teachers showed me. My AP tests were a breeze because the teachers expect more from you than the actual judges who grade the tests. I am forever grateful for this school and the staff members. A few of the female staff members consider me their own child and always would look out for me. At this school you are more than just a "Kid", they KNOW you and your family and want to take care of you and help you succeed on whatever path you desire. The fact that it is a STEM school was such a bonus to me in the end. When I started the school in the 6th grade I hated science. I kept telling my mom how much I hated it, then 6 months later I was on the Science Olympiad team and my mom was having to drag me out of the building every day.If you are looking for a smaller environment for your student, with hands on learning especially towards STEM education, with teachers who care this is the place for you. This school is perfect for academic students, especially in STEM. My son is very good in Math and Science and this school really caters toward these subjects. There are wonderful teachers in all subjects. He loved his English, History, Math, Science and other teachers and they are excellent teachers. He learned so much and they really go out of their way for the students. I got quick responses when emailing teachers. It is a small school so the teachers know the students well and really care and want to help. There are very few problems at the school. The kids are really good kids overall. The school wins all kinds of awards such as Science Olympiad, Math and History awards and it is top 100 most challenging school in America. Top 20 in Florida. It has many AP classes. My son did great on the SAT and got scholarship offers from every college he applied to. The senior class got great offers to many colleges throughout the US. The high school counselor did a great job with the seniors making sure all their paperwork was done for scholarships and colleges. My son was challenged at OSS. He will have no problem academically in college.
Rating:I guess you could say I'm a seasoned "veteran" of OSS; I've been here for five years!! As a student who has just graduated from this school this past May and will be attending Emory University, one of the top twenty universities in the nation, I have nothing but great things to say about OSS. It's funny because I plan on majoring in English and creative writing---but that just goes to show how amazing OSS is at bolstering other fields of academia; the environment here just supports learning, passion, and talent as a whole! The school has prominent biomedical and engineering programs, so if you're into that kind of thing you should definitely attend! Yes, it's true we don't have many athletic facilities, but that's not what OSS is for; it's a SCIENCE school. No one should expect anything different. Being such a close-knit school, the community here feels more like a family than anything else--and I can certainly say that I will miss my little family here once I head off to GA! OSS is super academics-based, but if you're dedicated enough and love learning, attending this school is an investment you will never regret.
Rating:I am an extra proud mother. My son, Colin, has attended Orlando Science since 6th grade and he will now be graduating. He has been accepted to Notre Dame University and MIT, and has decided to attend MIT. All of Colin's hard work and perseverance has paid off and then some. I feel that we were blessed to find a stellar school in OSS. Everyone who works there, be it educator, administrator, or staff member gives their all so that the students can be successful. Colin has been able to thrive and achieve in the OSS environment. I am not only proud of his academic achievements but also of the kindhearted generous young man that he has become.
