Last Saturday, May the 7th OSS attended Energy Whiz Olympics with 8 teams for different competitions.

OSS Hands-on Hydrogen Team Students designed, built and raced fuel cell cars. The small model cars — powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and steered by wires — were built guided by our teachers for the competition. One of our teams did awesome job and could be able to rank in top 4 cars in their 1st year of participation. Congratulations to Sebastian Orellana and Dilan Patel for their success! Other competitions, Junior Solar Sprint Teams have raced solar cars and Solar Cook-off Teams cooked their recipe in Solar Ovens, which had been designed and built by students along with their coaches before the competition. Participant Students and Parents had a fun day besides the academic competition. We were also so happy to be able to participate in this kind of competition encouraging everyone to use renewable resources!

Background Info of EnergyWhiz Olympics

The EnergyWhiz Olympics is all about clean energy and creative kids. Each year, on the first Saturday in May, hundreds of students converge at the Florida Solar Energy Center in Cocoa, Florida to participate in renewable energy themed events.

Created by the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) in 1999, the EnergyWhiz Olympics is a forum for students to demonstrate their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) knowledge and skills as they relate to such energy topics as solar thermal, photovoltaics (PV) and hydrogen technology. Competitions associated with the EnergyWhiz Olympics include:
